Senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield), human trafficking survivors, and law enforcement will hold a bi-partisan press conference to rally support and highlight the need for Senate Bill 1042. Senator Grove will present SB 1042 in the Senate Public Safety Committee following the press conference.
Currently, human trafficking is not defined as a serious or violent felony under California law. SB 1042 will include human trafficking in the lists of crimes that are defined as serious and violent under California law, making the crime a strike under the Three Strikes law. Several community and international organizations, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and survivors have sent letters in support of SB 1042. In addition, more than 2,000 individuals have signed an online petition supporting the measure as well.
