Senator Shannon Grove announces a resolution to commemorate January 2023 as National Human Trafficking Awareness Month passed the California State Senate unanimously this morning.
Senate Resolution 6 (SR 6), recognizes and brings awareness to the growing crime of human trafficking in California. This resolution declares January 2023 as National Human Trafficking Awareness Month in an effort to stand together and raise awareness about the millions of victims globally, and the efforts of valuable organizations and individuals engaged in the fight against this modern form of slavery.
According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), there were an estimated 49 million human trafficking victims worldwide in 2021. Tragically, California is also a major center for human trafficking. With this resolution, the Senate of the State of California seeks to bring awareness to the trafficking of men, women, and children within the United States, and rally people to join the fight against this type of human exploitation.
“Human trafficking is an unconscionable crime that robs individuals of their dignity and denies them of their basic human rights,” said Senator Shannon Grove. “It has far-reaching and devastating consequences on those it affects. It is a violation of our principles of freedom and equality that we all hold dear and the perpetrators of this crime need to be held accountable.”
By commemorating January 2023 as National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we stand in solidarity with all the advocates who are working on the local, state and national levels to end modern day slavery. Together, we can ease the suffering of these victims, prosecute those responsible, and work towards a brighter, safer future for our communities.
