Senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) announced her legislation Senate Bill 1373 (SB 1373) to reform California’s pretrial Mental Health Diversion program passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee. With the recent signing of AB 46 (Nguyen) to give judges more discretion in granting mental health diversion, SB 1373 will go one step further to allow an evidentiary hearing where the evidence used to make the mental health diagnosis can be substantiated.
“I’m grateful the committee moved my bill to reform mental health diversion forward today,” said Senator Shannon Grove. “While we had to accept some amendments, the most important parts of the bill are still intact which is a huge step in the right direction. By combining the new judicial discretion recently signed into law with an evidentiary hearing that gives judges the critical information they need, we’re giving the justice system the tools necessary to keep our communities safe.”
Senate Bill 1373 will next be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee in August.
