SACRAMENTO – Continuing her efforts to advocate on behalf of members of the developmentally disabled community, Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) introduced Senate Bill 683 which has recently passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Human Services Committee. SB 683 would provide transparency and accountability in multiple ways for the 21 regional centers in California. SB 683 now heads to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
SB 683 would:
- Require regional center websites to conform to a standardized format developed by the State Department of Developmental Services (DDS) with stakeholder input.
- Require regional centers to provide any quantitative data available to the public in a machine readable format.
“California has more than 300,000 developmentally disabled individuals who consider regional centers their home away from home. When I served in the Assembly, I saw the horrific abuses that members of our vulnerable community endured in state centers. That is why I fought to close those centers and am now fighting to bring transparency and accountability to regional centers.
“There have been longstanding concerns from family members regarding accountability and transparency at regional centers. This bill will alleviate some of those concerns and is a step in the right direction to support the developmentally disabled community. I’m thrilled it has cleared the first two legislative hurdles,” said Leader Grove.
